Enthusiastic response to Cheltenham’s new-look Christmas lights

28th November 2017

Categories: News List

New Christmas lights adorning key parts of Cheltenham town centre have been praised by locals and visitors alike.

Cheltenham BID (Business Improvement District) has played a key role in installing new lights in the town this year, in partnership with Cheltenham Borough Council.

New features include a 3D sculpture at Boots Corner, attractive new motifs along the full-length of High Street, motifs and tree lights on The Promenade and a new LED Christmas Tree on Montpellier Terrace Roundabout.

Tracey Crews, Director of Planning at Cheltenham Borough Council said: “It was great to be part of the activities on Saturday, there was a real buzz across the different areas of the town centre and something for everyone in terms of entertainment.  Whilst we appreciate that we still have a lot of redevelopment going on, the new Christmas lights have helped to enliven the town.  The Christmas period is an important season for the town centre economy and we will work with Cheltenham BID in future years to build upon what we have achieved this year.”

The lights were switched on for the first time during the Christmas Street Party on Saturday (November 25). The BID also organised new activities during the events, which included Santa in a horse-drawn carriage and a walking nativity.

Among those to praise the new displays was Margaret Cavanagh, of Neal’s Yard Remedies, who said: “What a triumph. The lights are really beautiful, there was a wonderful atmosphere in the town, everyone loved them.”

Clem Fraser, Store Manager of Cavendish House said “The lights look amazing.  We have had so many compliments from our customers this evening”.

Belinda Hunt, BID operations manager, said: “We’ve been delighted to introduce new lights to so many different parts of the town centre this year.
“As well as the new motifs, we’ve added extra lights to the trees on The Strand, The Promenade and Montpellier.”

The BID plans to work with the council to improve the lights display still further in future years.

Terri Brewster, Chair of Cheltenham BID, said: “Improving the Christmas lights was highlighted as a key requirement of the town’s businesses when the BID was being set up.

“We see 2017 as the first step to further significant improvements next year and beyond as the town centre’s transformation is completed.”
