Raise Your Glass to Harvest Season

As Harvest Season approaches, see our guide to Beer and Brewery Tours!

Autumn is an important season for the beer industry. One of the four crucial ingredients of Britain’s favourite beverage, the hop, is harvested throughout the month of September on farms (mostly) based in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Kent.

Brewerism Brewery Tours, based in Cheltenham and leading tours to the many independent breweries of the Cotswolds since June 2016, has partnered with Stocks Farm in Suckley, Worcestershire, as well as a couple of nearby microbreweries to offer a unique day out to witness the harvest and sample some quality beer.

The ‘Hop Farm + Brewery Tour’ will run on Saturday September 30th, peak harvest time, and will include a tour of the extensive rows of British hops, the active processing facilities, and an on-site microbrewery featuring the farm’s traditional and experimental hop varieties in their ales.

Shandin Rickard-Hughes, founder and tour guide of Brewerism, is excited to be the first tour company to offer this experience in the UK.

“Hops are truly incredible plants which have been grown and bred for brewing for hundreds of years. Whilst it’s common for people working in the industry to do a ‘hop walk’ to see the harvest, most of the public never get the chance. This year that changes for folks living in, or willing to travel to, the Gloucestershire/Worcestershire area.”

Demand from the craft beer industry has caused a recent revival in British hop farming and exports. Stocks Farm, one of the largest hop farms in the area, has been around for over two centuries, and in the current family for over 50 years. The owner also plays a key role in the British Hop Association, promoting ‘Buy British’ locally and internationally. This demand has also attracted media attention, and Stocks Farm were featured on a BBC Breakfast on September 1st, which showed filming of the hop harvest.

“It’s such an exciting time to be a beer drinker’ says Shandin. ‘Not only is there so much fantastic choice, but we’re also enjoying an age in which people are invited, and interested, to learn more about the food and drink that they consume. Offering the hop walk tour was a natural next step when I met the lovely folks at Stocks Farm.”

This special tour will travel by minibus from Cheltenham to Worcester, with pick-ups in each, then on to the farm and brewery. Prices include the tours, beer and transportation. Guests are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy with a beer in between the tours. Open to everyone 18+. Bookings can now be made online, spaces limited.
