Shop Montpellier and The Promenade

Shopping in Montpellier and The Promenade

The Promenade is a beautiful tree-lined shopping street that leads from High Street to the independent areas of Montpellier. The Prom, as it is known by the locals, is home to House of Fraser at Cavendish House, along with shops such as Jo Malone, Cath Kidston and LK Bennett. It is regarded as one of the finest shopping boulevards in the country. Cheltenham Borough Council has its home here in the grand Regency Municipal Offices, which are complete with a water fountain and the colourful Long Gardens.

Running parallel to the Promenade is Regent Street, which has numerous, bars, restaurants and nightclubs and the wonderful Everyman Theatre  <photo of the inside>.

Montpellier is a destination area where independent fashion, antiques and lifestyle boutiques sit alongside cafes and wine bars. <photo of Montpellier>

Spot the stone sculptures known as Caryatids (modelled on the Acropolis in Athens), which add to the deliciously continental feel of the area.

Just off the Promenade you will find Cheltenham’s main entertainment venue the Town Hall.  Its packed programme of live music, theatre, dance, comedy is unrivalled in Gloucestershire.

The Gardens

Imperial and Montpellier Gardens are two formal gardens which form an important part of Cheltenham’s regency landscape and sit in a total of 600 hectares that form Cheltenham’s Central Conservation Area, one of the largest areas of its kind in the UK.

Montpellier Gardens was part of the original Montpellier Spa developed in the early 19th Century and taken over by the council in 1893. There are tennis courts, a children’s play area and skate park along with a quieter area for relaxing, which features a small arboretum.

Imperial Gardens was the former private garden associated with the Sherbourne Spa, now the site of the Queens Hotel.  The buildings surrounding the park are all Grade 1 listed. Over 25,000 bedding plants are planted in the garden each year.  Behind a walled garden linked to the café, you will also find the oasis that is Skillicorne Gardens.
