The discovery of salty spring water in 1717 started Cheltenham's rise from small market village to sought-after spa town, sparking visits from historic greats including King George III, The Duke of Wellington, Jane Eyre and many more besides. It gave rise to our Town motto 'Salubritas et Eruditio' meaning 'health and education', and much of the architecture which appeared then, still stands today. Find out more about the Spa history...
