An exciting new activity for puzzle enthusiasts has launched in Cheltenham. Questivity provides GPS-led outdoor trails, combining elements of escape rooms, augmented reality and scavenger hunts in a fun themed challenge.

People solving a outdoor puzzle

Despite the rain, a number of intrepid heroes turned out at the weekend to try the new outdoor ‘quests’. Laura and her family tried out Magic Portal and commented “We all enjoyed the fun challenges and puzzles - a good variety to keep everyone engaged. Tricky enough to be interesting, but not so hard that we needed clues. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes puzzles, escape rooms etc.”

Questivity was started by one of the founders of Escape Rooms Cheltenham, Pete George. Pete took a career ‘break’ from his corporate training business in 2021 to help rebuild the fledgling escape room business after the Covid pandemic. He established the escape rooms in a new venue in Cheltenham town centre, and then decided to launch Eat Sleep Axe urban axe throwing at the same venue.

Now that the escape rooms and axe throwing businesses are proving successful, Pete hopes Questivity will also be popular in Cheltenham: “Cheltenham is a great place to go out and socialise, and the outdoor puzzle trails will offer another fun activity for locals, and the many visitors to the town, to enjoy.”

There are two games currently. Built in partnership with software games company Cluetivity, they use cutting edge GPS and augmented reality technology to provide an immersive experience where Cheltenham is seen like never before.

Magic Portal is set in the fantasy world of goblins, wizards and mushroom monsters. Questers need to locate various magic Crystals around Pittville Park using their iPad magical device and items from their Quest Pack, in order to close the Magic Portal before monsters from the other side cause chaos in our world.

In the second game, Blackout, agents from the secretive W.I.S.E. organisation are required to defeat evil hackers intent on shutting down the power grid and causing a national blackout. The emergency generator located somewhere beneath Cheltenham town centre must be turned on in under 90 minutes to prevent disaster. Questers can even hack into other teams (if they choose) to add an extra fun dimension to the game.

Each game comes in a Standard or Challenging version, and there is even a Family version of Magic Portal for families with younger children who want “an easy stroll. With a few easy puzzles and a stop for ice cream”. Cost is £15 per person for teams of 2-6 people and under 8s are free.
