January is here, and with that comes a wealth of sales, with savings to be found everywhere. With Cheltenham’s thriving high street, and new shops opening in the Brewery Quarter all the time, there is no shortage of shops to visit and enjoy. However, we thought it would be good to focus on some of the best independent businesses in Cheltenham and celebrate the variety and quality present all around the town. Here are our top picks for places to visit for all of your independent shopping needs this January.

Montpellier:

Montpellier is home to some of the best Cheltenham has to offer from independent businesses, including a huge selection of bars and cafés, dispersed between the boutique stores. Here are just a few of the diverse range of shops that are on offer-

The Union Project Design + Home:

Shortly after the Union Project’s menswear store was moved to Cambray Place, their Design and Home store took its place in their original location in Montpellier. Located opposite the Queen’s Hotel, they offer some of the best homeware and lifestyle products available in the area. Curating the best from Japan and Scandinavia, the store has a focus on well designed, functional products that will last.

Sandra Dee offer beautifully crafted lingerie, nightwear and swimwear. With over 30 years of experience, and a custom, tailored experience for every customer, no expense is spared on getting you the highest quality and best possible fit. Sandra Dee has a beautifully curated range of top brands, along with a specialist measuring service. They are the perfect place to find stylish and elegant lingerie.

Montpellier Wine Bar:

With its distinctive curved exterior, the Wine Bar is a Montpellier institution, with contemporary décor, a seasonal menu and a diverse, well stocked bar. Montpellier Wine Bar is the perfect place to go for refreshment when shopping at the wealth of boutique shops in the area. Montpellier is a great social hub located in the heart of Cheltenham.

Tivoli, Bath Road and the Suffolks

Tivoli, Bath Road and The Suffolks are another set of brilliant districts in Cheltenham, featuring a wealth of shops for both visitors and the local community. They are each a distinct area, but it is possible to walk from one district to the other seamlessly and take in all they have to offer. They all feature some great independent retailers including bookshops, hairdressers, and brilliant local pubs.

Maison Chaplais –

A local delicatessen and Café, this is the perfect spot for delicious, cooked to order food, perfect for breakfast and lunch. Whether you are just dropping by, or you want to spend longer winding down, this is a great location, renowned for its brilliant menu.

Inside Out –

Inside Out is a quaint and unique independent gift shop in the heart of Bath Road, with gifts for all occasions, including a great selection of jewellery, books and toys. 2019 marks twenty years of operating and providing “something a bit different”, you’ll be able to find perfect gifts that you just can’t find anywhere else.

Annual Street Fairs –

The Suffolks Independent retailers team up with a variety of pop-up suppliers to create memorable street fairs. Having traditionally been held on May Bank Holidays, there are now an additional four dispersed throughout the year. The street fairs are a brilliant place to try local produce, meet with friends and discover new favourites.

First Thursdays

First Thursdays is a celebration of Cheltenham’s independent culture, focused around Clarence Street, St George’s Place and Well Walk. Every first Thursday of the month sees the local shops and The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum opening late, with live music, comedy and drawing, as well as a great selection of food and drink from The Stable. Check out Cheltenham’s best record store, Badlands, for the latest releases on Vinyl and CD, or find all your board-game needs covered by Incom Gaming. Explore everything this great cultural quarter has to offer, late into the evening!

These are just the faves of our ‘guy on the inside’ and Cheltenham Champion, Josh. You can see all the shops in town, including over 130 independents right here…
