Core & Co. have opened a brand new reformer pilates studios at Elkstone Studios.
Here the founder, Matilda, shares her thoughts around all things pilates, reformer and answers some of the most common questions.
So, what actually is reformer pilates?
Reformer pilates is a specialised method of movement, and works by isolating and challenging the smaller muscles of the body, leading to a longer, leaner and stronger you. Working into balance, posture and of course your powerhouse core muscles, Reformer re-tailors the way your body responds to movement and challenge. You'll want to come back for more, it’s empowering and most of all, it’s genuinely really fun.
And why is everyone talking about reformer?
Well, some of us have been talking about it for many years, but it’s definitely entered popular culture over the last few. Everyone is talking about it because, speaking simply, it is wildly effective. You’ll gain strength rapidly and learn to engage your muscles in a way that is low impact, sustainable and transformative.
What can I expect from a reformer pilates class at Core & Co.?
At Core & Co., we’re experts in expansive, uplifting movement that will leave you glowing from the inside out. Our classes are always inclusive, accessible and open to all.
We offer 2 class types - Dynamic and Gentle. Dynamic classes are strength focused; we’ll move through a holistic, whole-body flow, isolating and targeting muscles, building an enduring strength. Gentle classes are more stretch focused - we move slower and deeper, allowing the body to release into stretch and gentle strengthening.
And the clue is in the name, at Core & Co., all our classes centre around your powerhouse core muscles. We’ll challenge and inspire you to move in ways you might not have done before.

What is the best way to get started?
A great way to get started is with one of our beginner series courses. 4 weeks, and we’ll take you through the pillars and principles of pilates and progress you through beginner movement toward intermediate choreography. Check our website and get booked in to the next one.
What surprises people the most about their first session?
How much they can do. Sometimes people can be really nervous to start, especially if they’ve had some time away from exercise or perhaps haven’t ever found the thing that makes their soul spark, but often after one class people find they’ve been able to keep up and participate in every exercise.
Our classes are always layered; that means you can scale each movement up and down. Your instructor will guide you to find the level that is right for you.
Who do you think pilates is perfect for (but they don’t realise it yet)?
I have yet to meet a man who wouldn't benefit from pilates. Strength, posture, core engagement and balance and the things that keep you going well into your eighties - and they’re not just for women.
What is the biggest misconception about reformer?
That it’s just for a certain 'type' of person in coordinated activewear.
My strongest clients are in their forties, fifties and sixties. In our Nailsworth studio, our youngest client is eighteen and our oldest is eighty-five. There truly is no age limit to Joseph Pilates’ repertoire and any studio who makes you feel like there is, isn’t teaching the method.
What can people expect when they arrive in Core & Co. Elkstone?
Firstly, our studio is beautiful: brand new reformers, serene lighting, gentle mirrors and calming scent. But most importantly: a friendly pilates teacher, who will take the time to understand you and your body, greet you by name and make you feel welcome, at ease and supported when you get moving.
You’ll be challenged, and you’ll be championed. We can’t wait to welcome you to our studio.
