Things to Do in Cheltenham

Cheltenham has always been a popular weekend break destination, maybe to take in some theatre or enjoy some retail therapy, however, over the last few years it has evolved, offering a mix of traditional and modern culture.

Our heritage and architecture is one of the many draws for national and international tourists alike, and walking tours are offered throughout the spring and summer to highlight the most notable buildings and monuments.  Take to the water at the boating lake in Pittville Park or visit the 1930s style outdoor lido for a real taste of nostalgia!

Cheltenham also has many beautiful parks and gardens, all with some historic interest, be it the statue of Gustav Holst, composer of The Planets, to The Chalybeate Well, which still partially survives today at Sandford Park.  Whether you pick a quiet spot and read your favourite book, take the family or meet with friends, the parks can be enjoyed at any time of year as the displays change with the seasons.

Most notably close by you will find Cheltenham Racecourse, home to the Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup, the Open and many other events.  If your way of relaxing is doing something a little more active, then hot air balloon flights are available from Cheltenham Racecourse, pre-booking is essential by calling them on 01952 212750.  Kingsholm Stadium, home of Gloucester Rugby, is also within easy reach.

Why not try an Afternoon Tea at The Daffodil in The Suffolks, a former cinema and a must for lovers of the art deco era; or at MGallery Queens Hotel on the Promenade, recently refurbished in the most elegant of tastes.  Other recommendations would be No. 38 The Park and, of course, The Wilson Cafe - their cakes are spectacular!

The Brewery quarter now offers the multiplex Imax Cinema, bowling alley and many high street branded restaurants, and Cheltenham has superb continental café culture during the day, and a vibrant nightlife scene as the sun sets, whether you enjoy dancing, theatre or love music.

Whilst we are a town and seen as a cultural destination, there are many things to do in Cheltenham for families.  See our guide to Indoor and Outdoor family things to do – you will be pleasantly surprised by all that is on offer if you want a break with the children or grandchildren.

You will certainly not be stuck for things to do in Cheltenham, and whilst there is always a cliché that there is “something for everyone” in every destination, we certainly have a fantastic range on offer.
